Winter gets in through a crack in the window
we can’t figure out how to patch.
The screens are old
but too expensive to replace, so we stuff
a towel against the sill and shiver into each other.

In these quiet months, we lie dormant,
secluded in silence, exercising caution.
We talk with surgical precision,
careful not to stir the hurt we have nursed.
It’s been this way for months––this familiar cold.
