Great talk by Susan Jonhston at #SMBE23 about sexual dimorphism in recombination in wild vertebrates, showing difference in recombination rates of gametes between different sexes. I was wondering if the epigenetic landscape of gametes, such as hiatone modifications, cpg island methylations, correlates with these dimorphisms.

So I know why #insects are technically classified as #animals, but I feel like I should have an objection with classifying something that doesn't have a brain with creatures that actively think and feel as #vertebrates and a good chunk of the #invertebrates do...

It just feels like it muddles the #ethics: I wouldn't think twice about mass poisoning a colony of ants or roaches, but I would have serious reservations with even a single rat.

Many of the oldest #fossils from the countries of the #Zambezi Basin come from #Namibia 🇳🇦, so we're returning there this week to meet the #Carboniferous #fish Namaichthys schroederi. It was an early member of a group with a bright future: the #Actinopterygii, or ray-finned #fishes, which, since Namaichthys swam the #Namibian seas 300 million years, has #evolved into by far the most diverse group of #vertebrates.

Yes this is based on one of the higher CO2 emission scenarios, but this outlook for land #vertebrates is grim.
