I have sat with him for hours. He is a statue. But a living and breathing one. “He's alive! He's alive!” I have to keep repeating to myself. It’s so easy to forget, and I have at times. You could debate the philosophy of it, but the unmitigated medical fact is that he is alive. And I see a #vestige of life, in his eyes. It’s a faint but certain spark. And my hope in being in a room with him, reading to him, listening to music with him, is to fan that flame. Even if only a little.

He examined his fingertips, the faint remains of calluses a #vestige of his long love of music. He couldn’t remember making a decision to stop playing. Yet somehow days between practice turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and before long he’d just… stopped.

He lifted his old guitar out of its case, the sweet scent of spruce filling the air. As he played a chord, the bite of the strings both painful and familiar, he couldn’t help but smile.

As he sits alone in his unit, Fred looks around at the neatly arranged photographs, the vestiges of his married life.

He was an independent man, well groomed and very fastidious about his appearance. Clean shaven, hair styled with his favourite brylcreem, polished leather shoes and always in a pressed collared shirt.

All the ladies in the home thought he'd be a splendid catch, but he was not inclined to acquiesce their requests. He was married, even though Margie had passed.

Fred loved photography, ever since he bought his first Olympus. There was one in particular that stood out. Walking over to the mantle, Fred picked it up and allows himself to be lost in the moment.

Her radiant smile in her bright floral yellow paisley dress. Hair up in a beehive and her long white boots that made her look straight like a model from a vogue magazine. He too cut a dashing figure and together they were the perfect pair.

He remembers the day like it was yesterday. Travelling down to the coast on the narrow two lane roads to start their summer holiday, the first of many they would spend together. Picnics on the grass and long walks on the beach at sunset, hand in hand with a whole life ahead of them.

He was captivated by her, an old fashioned love at first sight that struck him like a thunderbolt.

A love that would last a lifetime, even if now all he has are the memories of days gone by.
