#ImageOfTheDay: the Feast of St Peter & St Paul.
In a 12th century Romanesque capital in the Narthex of the Basilica of the Madeleine at #VĂ©zelay, the two saints are praying for a young man. Has the sculptor introduced St Peter into the story of Eutychus whom St Paul revived after he fell asleep during his long sermon & tumbled out of the window (Acts 20.7ff)?

Tuesday Travels. Midsummer in Vézelay. The village crowned by its great Basilica of the Madeleine is full of more intimate charms that invite us to linger on a warm summer’s day. It’s a photographer’s paradise where hardly a stone, let alone a building, seems out of place.

Tuesday’s #ImageOfTheDay. Winter light & shadow in the Basilica of the Madeleine, #Vézelay. Today is St #Lucy’s Day, the light-bearer who illuminates the shortest day of the Julian Calendar, what John Donne called “the year’s midnight”.
Wednesday’s #ImageOfTheDay. The tower of the former church of St Pierre at #Vézelay in Burgundy, France. The nave was demolished soon after the French Revolution, but the mayor petitioned the authorities to keep the tower intact on the grounds that every commune needs its village clock. The ruined nave is now a car-park, but the clock still faithfully chimes the hours.
Monday’s #ImageOfTheDay. A bronze sculpture by Parisian artist François Brochet (1925-2001). I call it “La Salutation” (“The Greeting”) but this may not be its original title. The teenage Brochet met Le Corbusier in #Vézelay & was inspired by his telling him that “art confers freedom”. He later bought a summer house in the village which remains a gallery dedicated to his paintings, prints, sculptures & ceramics.
