The x logs show X is trying to start the drm on the RX6400 for some reason. Is it supposed to do that when that card is assigned to vifo-pci?

Spent some time solidifying my VFIO/Hypervisor setup on my main rig. I was running Arch with QEMU configured, but ran into some issues with random reboots after some recent kernel updates. Since this is my main rig for work, play, and dev, I decided to switch things up for something a little more stable. Now I'm on Proxmox and I'm actually quite enjoying the experience. Details cont.

So my #windows 11 #vfio #vm broke itself when updating... it's so freaking annoying. Goes to show how fragile #windows has become

Today I bought an Intel Arc A770 Limited Edition (aka: the 16GB) graphics card and popped it into my system.

Now, this would normally be a fairly easy thing. I wanted the extra vram, I wanted the intel encoders, video editing with this should should be a breeze.

...but I use #proxmox and route USB controllers and GPUs and an nvme ssd via #vfio directly to my "daily driver" vm.

Everything was ready to go, except... (1/?)

I have scoped out a Ryzen 9 7000 series CPU since it has the integrated GPU, which will work for my GPU Passthrough requirements, but depending on my PSU, I may be able to use both my 5600XT and a new GPU. 5600XT for Linux and the new GPU for the passthrough VM. May up my memory requirement from 32GiB to 64GiB for other projects I want to run.

I did GPU passthrough with KVM, QEMU and VFIO about 5 years ago. My current hardware does not have integrated so I cannot blacklist the GPU from my kernel in my current setup. Currently scoping hardware that will let me do that again. 👀

#fedora #fedora37 #vfio Upgrade from 36 to 37 was great, including a QEMU/VFIO Windows 11 guest with passed-through SSD, Ethernet controller, and RTX3050 graphics card (with LookingGlass).

Only had to fix two SELinux permissions.

Superb. Liking it a lot.

Finally managed to create a GPU Passthrough VM on Windows 11 without weird stutter or high cpu usage! Pretty happy with the result

so i've moved my macos #kvm to its own nvme. what was much snappier on the sata ssd, in the qemu image than on baremetal nvme windows is now even better. however this thing was advertised to 7k MB/s read ..it is not quite there. due to apfs i am not sure how to verify this test right now. using virtio-blk because i was unable to passthrough the nvme controller – not even manually. (unviable group, even when forced to #vfio module)

lets see if i can tweak it a bit – suggestions welcome #ovmf

WTH, in order to stop audio being choppy in Windows guest, I had to tweak some registry settings to force enable message based interrupts on the GPU's audio interface: https://vfio.blogspot.com/2014/09/vfio-interrupts-and-how-to-coax-windows.html
