What the Dickens? Our Mutual Friend (my favourite book ever) - YouTube. Haven’t watched this video yet, but saving for later. Our Mutual Friend is easily my favourite Dickens novel, and one of my absolute all time favourite novels ever. youtube.com/watch?v=HKIG2UPlfl

Rather stunned earlier today at the passage I read in , where takes a pointed and extended jibe at and against foreigners. I’ll have to gather some more thoughts about this, and will probably blog about it in the coming days. It felt so timeless, and so Brexity. Dickens is hardly blameless in racist attitudes. His oft is notable. But oh, this was on point.

Fancying a rewatch of 1999 version of Wives and Daughters. We haven’t seen it since it first aired but have the , which I just pulled out of a precariously tall DVD pile in our sitting room! Looking forward to it. I reread the original novel recently. imdb.com/title/tt0215364/

Nothing in the totally horrible and doomed marriage of Monica and Edmund Widdowson that a few sessions with a marriage counselor couldn’t fix. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"I can hardly describe accurately the exact position of the Masters family without first telling all that I know enough the Morton family; and it is absolutely essential that the reader should know all the Masters family intimately."

Reminds me of the beginning of : Nothing will be wonderous of you don't know Marley is dead to begin with.

I sure do appreciate these narrators highlighting the important parts!

Wise advice with a side of snide:

"A landlord if he wishes to be popular should be seen frequently. If he lives among his farmers they will swear by him, even though he raises his rental every ten or twelve years and never puts a new roof to a barn for them."

"So far the interior of the house has fallen from its past greatness. But the exterior is maintained with much care."

This is probably just a description of a house, and not a metaphor for the social condition of Dillsborough, right?

Why not both!

Also, why is it so important to emphasize how much of the town is built in brick? I'm not up to researching today, so just leaving a pin in that thought.

"It's chief glory is its parish church, which is ancient and inconvenient, having not as yet received any of those modern improvements, which of late have become common throughout England."

My brief research suggests this is the turn from Gothic Revival to Arts and Crafts, though this church is likely more like the small Wren-like churches.

Ironically, Arts and Crafts buildings required wealthy patrons. None to be found in Dillsborough?

New Year, new book, and it starts with a banger of an opening sentence,

"I never could understand why anybody should ever have begun to live at Dillsborough, or why the population there should have been at any time recruited by new comers."

Delightfully petty, showing the kind of person the narrator is, but also immediately reveals the thematic importance of geography.

I'm assuming. It's my first ever read.

I kind of fell in love with Oscar Wilde while researching his beef with Willa Cather for an essay last semester, but I’d somehow never read any of his work.
It is time.

Dickens is renouned for his skills at Showing, but in he Tells a lot of Scrooge's character development.

In the Past, he's happy to be reunited with family and enjoys the Fezziwig party.

In scene 3, suddenly he has "a changed nature"

The change is left unexplained. The reader can make educated guesses, but that's unsatisfying for such a large plot point.

Unless the point is it doesn't matter how misers are made. A warning that anyone can turn Scrooge?

In "Ace," Angela Chen challenges readers to think of novels that

-are not YA or sci-fi/fantasy
-do not include romance as a major plot point
-has no explicit sexual themes
-does not "present romantic love as necessary and central to flourishing"

I propose passes the test.
