Lost Railways of Galloway: Kirkcudbright Branch Line
Here's my latest wee #history #video , once again about Galloway's lost Railways. The Branch Line to Kirkcudbright opened in 1863 and closed just over 100 years later in 1965. Along the way it saw tragedy, triumph and glory as Scotland's Best Kept Station.

“The Devil’s Acre”, in Westminster, was one of the worst slums in Victorian Britain. Despite the slum being cleared long ago, the name persists due to the number of Tory MPs who reside there.

The #Victorians took away the #pockets from women's clothing because they thought women shouldn't be allowed to own anything to put in them:

Lost Railways of Galloway: Castle Douglas
For just over a hundred years, Castle Douglas had its own Train Station, one that went quickly from terminus on a branch line to thriving local hub station where the Portpatrick line and the Kirkcudbright Branch line met. Featuring the old railway bridge under Abercromby Road where there was also, briefly, a second station.

Is there such a thing as a Victorian train journey planner ? Or a database of timetables from say, the 1870's?

New Video on Youtube: Robert Owen, The Father of British Socialism
Pretty much forgotten today, I think he has actually had a greater impact on the British Left than Karl Marx - and that isn't really a good thing

Based on this week’s episode, we also have some new merch! Inspired by Dr. Dittmer’s comment that #Victorians saw the uterus as the “source of all evil,” I made this Demon Uterus design so you can scare your neighbors with an obscure history reference

On this day in 1842 my 3 x great grandmother Mary Hopkin gave birth to Thomas Reynolds, out of wedlock. Thomas’ father, also Thomas, died in 1845. He did not marry Mary.
On 24 August 1850 Mary married my 3 x great grandfather William Howe. The couple had four children. Thomas Reynolds lived with the family until adulthood when he found work on the local farms.

Now why didn't someone else beat the Chinese to it?
We seem to have lost the ability to invent things as the #Victorians did, even if some of them were a flop. As a result, someone else beats us to it.
Hi #histodons Anyone know what this might be? It’s not right as a pendant so thought it might be a clock weight? It’s about 4cm and made of pewter/lead type metal with a silver wash that’s worn away. The bail isn’t conducive to a jewellery bail and chain, so what is it? Can’t find similar clock weight… #Antiques #Jewellery #Clocks #Victorians

Trams are a major form of public transport in #Melbourne, #Narrm, #Australia.
The system is the largest operational urban tram network in the world.
#Melburnians also benefit from an extensive network of #trains (above ground and an underground loop in the city - CBD), including regional above ground #VLine services) and a magnificent bus network.
#PublicTransport here is world-class, especially now with the huge, ongoing network expansions and upgrades / capital works designed to meet current and future commuter needs.
Stats (source; wiki):
Melbourne tramway network consists of 250 kilometres (160 miles) of double track
493 trams
24 routes
763 tram stops
Trams are the second most used form of public transport in overall boardings in Melbourne, after the commuter railway network
#Trams have operated continuously in Melbourne since 1885 (horses used to power the first tram line)
A total of 206 million passenger trips were made in 2017–18 (most recent available stats)
These new trams (pictured) were made in Melbourne
#PublicTransportVictoria aka #PTV do a terrific job getting #Melburnians and #victorians where they need to be… you can tell I’m a big fan!!

Why, why, why did Victorians never source anything??? There were so many so called 'historians' in the 1800s writing books, articles & reviews on people and events of the past, with lots of great stories & anecdotes that may actually be useful to someone, but rarely have I ever found them referencing where they actually got the information, which makes it pretty much unusable. It's so frustrating! 😭
Since sad wee men are in the news, here's a reminder that they have ay been with us!
