A bit embarrassed to have forgotten to congratulate Ukrainian broadcaster Suspilne on another high-quality national final. We're so used to this level of professionalism from Ukraine that it's easy to skip over the fact that this show was recorded in a bomb shelter next to a Kyiv metro line. Incredible work!

Before I head off and do other things, a quick shout-out to Moisei, who clearly didn't have his best performance on the night, but I'm glad the Ukrainian public made sure he was not left in last place (although no one really deserved to be last). No doubt he has experienced things in his service in the Ukrainian armed forces that no one should have to deal with.

So, congratulations to TVORCHI, our first #Eurovision2023 artist! "Heart of Steel" definitely had some of the better staging on the night, which I'm sure will improved upon by the time it reaches Liverpool. And is this the first time Ukraine has sent in a person of colour as their main performer? Always worth noting these things.

I'll put up a full review of the winning song in the coming days.

I'm not a fan of the judges telling entries what they thought of their performances immediately afterwards. I know some other national finals do this as well, but I wish they'd stop, as I fear this may influence some of the voting audience.

Watching the #Vidbir performances, here's my overview, measured against what I thought of the songs before I saw the live.

[Studio version was better than live]:

Moisei, FIINKA

[Studio and live about the same]:

OY Sound System, DEMCHUK, Jerry Heil, KRUTЬ, Tember Blanche, Angelina, 2TONE, TVORCHI

While I thought a few of the acts used some clever bits of staging, no one blew me away, and I think the vocals from FIINKA and Moisei unfortunately were not up to their studio cuts.

Quick summary of #Vidbir thoughts: Overall a decent bunch, I'd have been content with any of about 5 winners, including the actual winner. But nothing entirely grabbed me. KRUTЬ was my favourite based on studio and live and I'll check our more of her stuff.

What the actual fuck just happened at #Vidbir. There were so many good songs to choose from and they pick a shitty mid-aughts top 40 knockoff? Incredible. Songs like this show up in #Eurovision all the time and they always finish near the bottom. What a missed opportunity.

That said, the broadcast itself was amazing; just an incredible show from #Ukraine showing off the resilience of the Ukrainian people. Slava Ukraini!
