Jens Heimdahl: "Vad var laukr?" [Eng sum: What was laukr?]
The context of laukr (‘leek’/’onion’) in sagas and inscriptions, implies that this plant was central as a symbol and tool in magic.

I’ve finished writing the home exam in my Viking Age university course. Four pages of thoroughly researched pages took longer than I’d hoped. I have six more days to hand it in though, so I might wait a bit and look at it again in a day or two.

Today’s excursion ended at Jarlabanke’s bridge in Täby north of Stockholm. Here we find two runestones erected by Jarlabanke after himself, and a road lined with erected stones. Two other runestones have been moved to the churches in Danderyd and Fresta.

Jarlabanke’s family, starting with his grandmother, has erected 19 runestones that we know of today. Jarlabanke has erected as many as six stones after himself, more than anyone else. The bridge was built in the 1050’s.

Here’s another runestone I visited in Sigtuna today. It’s U 393, and it’s erected by Ofeg in memory of his sisters. It is made of granite and has carvings on two sides, but the band on one side does not have any runes. It stands on the rune path near U 392. Källström has attributed the stone to the carver Visäte. The ornamentation is in the styles Pr 2 and Pr 3.

It reads: “Ófeigr had this stone raised in memory of his two sisters Tóra(?) and Hróðvé.”

This inscription on a boulder on the “rune path” in Sigtuna is called U 392. The style of the inscription is “Rak”, and it’s dated to 980-1015.

It reads: “Sveinn had these runes carved … the second was called …, the third Ǫzurr, the fourth Geirmundr … was their mother.”

This is U 337, a runic carving on a boulder in Granby north of Stockholm. It’s one of the largest in Uppland. It has a complicated ornamentation in the Urnes style. The inscription mentions several people, some of whom are mentioned on other nearby runestones.

Since it’s flat on the ground it’s very exposed to the environment and gets overgrown with lichen and algae. It was almost impossible to see the inscription.

Some pictures of Nordian’s mound in Åshusby to the north of Stockholm. Nearby is a gravefield with lots of small burial mounds, completely overgrown with trees. This is the third largest mound in Sweden, only the Anundshög and old Uppsala mounds are bigger.

This is the runestone U Nf 56 by the Saint Lars church ruin in Sigtuna. It’s raised by Anund after himself. It’s one of the self-raised runestones. It was found in 1956 in the north side if the city park. It was part of the wall foundation of the Saint Lars church.

The inscription translated into English reads: “Anund had this stone erected after himself during his lifetime.”

This is Rösaring. A procession road leading up to a viking age mound, possible bronze age cairns and a stone labyrinth. The road is about half a kilometer long and used to be lined by large wooden poles.

Been making this Viking age needle case today. This one is copied from an example from Cnip on Lewis. I have to be careful what I put as these images and videos are being banned on some platforms!

The water in this creek is deep red because of the iron ore in the ground. Though the Vikings are known for their use of iron, they never mined for it. Instead, they extracted iron out of the ground, looking for signs like the color of the water in this creek. @histodons @medievodons @archaeodons

Even though the Viking Age and the time periods that preceded it happened during a period of warming of the climate, this photo of the recreated chieftain's hall at Borg, Norway, gives you an idea what life could be like for Viking Age Scandinavians who lived around the Arctic circle. The photo was taken in January 2019.
