While I'm no longer strictly off caffeine, I am still trying to avoid it as a neural stimulant while I work.
The best substitute I've found that achieves a similar effect is high-speed Viking metal playing in the background.
(My ear is also getting trained to hear the subtleties in screaming metal voice, as an additional bonus. It's almost like learning to understand a new language.)
