oday in 1917, Canadian troops take a fortified knoll outside Givenchy-en-Gochelle as the German Sixth Army retreats to the Oppy-Mericourt line.
With that, the Battle of Vimy Ridge comes to an end.
The battle resulted in 3,598 men killed & 7,004 wounded.

Today in 1917, the Battle of Vimy Ridge begins. In the battle, four Canadian divisions & one British brigade capture Vimy Ridge under the command of Julian Byng.
It comes at the cost of 3,578 dead and 7,000 wounded. Four Canadians earn the Victoria Cross in the battle.

During a 2019 trip to Paris, I took a day trip out to Arras to visit the Vimy Ridge Memorial. I took the train, which I almost missed because there was a transit strike in the city that day. I ended up having to walk to the train station from the hotel, which took over an hour... but I got there with five minutes to spare.

He was recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal but received no recognition for his heroics until 2010.

Today in 1936, King Edward VIII ascends to the throne following the death of his father King George V. He only serves until Dec. 11, 1936 when he abdicates the throne.
One of his few activities as King was unveiling the Vimy Memorial in France on July 26, 1936.
