@mpotter Further to this. I met Giller Prize winner Vincent Lam after a book reading in Canada (https://www.vincentlam.ca/) and he gave me advice that is on point and parallels the "Kill Your Darlings" phrase.

The funny thing is, when I met him, he gave me this advice and every time I tried to remember his helpful words, I would say, "Vincent Lam told me that if he could give me one piece of writing advice, it would be... " and then I would blank out and forget what he had said.

A teacher friend said to me, "You'll remember the advice when you need it." And she was right. It floated in a year later when I needed it. And I'm sharing it here with you now: he said to me, "don't be afraid to cut material. SAVE IT. *It could be that it's writing for your next project.*"

And he was right.
