Vinho Verde was a simple, fizzy and short-lived bit of plonk. There were some producers who fought back against the stereotype. There are many more now. This was one of the original stalwarts in making real table wines. The vintage is a great one in Portugal in general, but perhaps a warm one. This is not the top showing for this winery, but still good as a 12 year old Vinho Verde with plenty of life left.

@arvidrosengren Btw, 2013 is a vintage often ruined by heavy rain late in harvest. For those who got grapes in before the rain, it can be fine even in red, but I've found it to be a super white vintage. Heh. When I find the Portuguese wanting to show off aging ability of whites, I tend to see the 2008s trotted out. I think 2013 is going to replace that. Then you get people like Pedro Araujo who will send me 15 year old versions of Loureiro from vintages like 2003 (very warm) or a 14 year old from 2002, a lousy year. And it still works. So, this is a bottle of Avesso from one of the best producers for it. In monovarietals, Vinho Verde boasts Alvarinho at the top, I think, although if you want to make a case for Loureiro, well, I love it too. Can Avesso compete?

Certainly, producers are treating it as the next big thing. There have always been some, but the question seems more like who isn't making one now. I have mixed feelings. The best of them, I've rather liked. Especially when they have a fine core of acidity.Those have certainly been well reviewed. Often, though, they seem to lack the personality of Alvarinho and Loureiro, boring by comparison.

Intro: I come from a long line of vinho verde makers in Monção and with most “family sized” properties for personal consumption, the wine is red. Bet you never met someone who said their “a-ha” wine was made with vinhão! These days I live in the Toronto area at the exact mid-point between my office and favourite local winery.
