Portraits of Pawnee people, Oklahoma, 1880s.

The Pawnee are a Native American tribe of Caddoan linguistic stock who lived on the Platte River in what is now Nebraska, U.S., from before the 16th century to the latter part of the 19th century. They were composed of relatively independent bands: the Kitkehahki, Chaui, Pitahauerat, and Skidi. The Pawnee are a matrilineal people. Ancestral descent is traced through the mother, and children are considered born into the mother’s clan and are part of her people. Women were active in political life, although men would take decision-making responsibilities.
