8/ I put the tape recorder back together enough for it be safe until I got a proper workspace cleared off, and on a whim tried a tape in it. It's working again, but now it's got a sort of buzzy, noisy sound to it. It's a pretty simple design, and whoever assembled the thing did so in such a messy way that I wonder if I should just replace/resolder everything.

7/ I'm not seeing anything obviously wrong. I sort of expected to open this up and see that a cap had popped or was leaking (the yellow crust on a couple of the caps is dead adhesive from some decades old tape I peeled off) or something else that'd be a giveaway. Guess it's time to get out the multimeter.

6/ Four easily accessible phillips screws and you're right there at the audio i/o board, belts and speaker. What a convenient, simple design! From the sounds of the screws coming loose, I thought I must be the first to open the shell since it left manufacturing, but there appear to be bodges on the audio circuitry and witness marks on the screws that secure it to the cassette player mechanism.

3/ The recording seems relatively clean, so my first thought was that this was recorded from a computer directly - perhaps something like one of the old Atari 8-bit machines, that would play an audio recording while reading the program data? I am pretty sure though that I heard a chair scoot on the second third loop of the song. So now I'm curious if anyone recognizes the tune?

2/ After 5 mins or so I started using the Fast Forward to jump around and see if there was anything recorded, with no hints of anything. So I let it spool up all the way around the other reel, and tried the other side. There was an abrupt sort of noise preceding a recording of a simple song being played on repeat, which to me sounds like maybe MIDI music.

1/Got a cassette tape recorder from the thrift store today. I didn't notice until I got it home it had a cassette in it, entirely spooled to side B. After I pulled the batteries out (labeled 'Best if installed by Jan 1997') I plugged in a figure-8 cable and hit play. Surprisingly, the tape reels started spinning and the speaker output the kind of quiet white noise you'd expect from a blank tape.

Snuck some quick photos while I was home for just a sec - sorry about the poor quality. This is a Vetter Model 3000A PCM Recording Adaptor. This particular unit was originally owned by the University of Alabama at Birmingham, which combined with the research lab equipment focus of the recycler I got it from makes me wonder what this thing was being used for.
The manual is available on IA, linked here:

I think I'm about ready to start the overhaul on my old gunked-up reel-to-reel, does anyone have suggestions for cleaning up the old solidified grease?

#vintagehifi #tape #reeltoreel I haven't had a chance to mess with my reel-to-reel since I posted that video a few weeks back, so I was just packing it back up and decided to play the recording I made again. It's playing back at too high a speed, and also the tape counter mysteriously started working.

This is probably the best thrift store find I have ever had, and I have had some good ones. This is what appears to be a nearly-complete, functional Sony Tapecorder 260. Well, I suspect it's functional, anyhow. It appears to have been well-maintained and it will transit tape, but I can't tell if the play head works - I don't know if my tapes actually have anything on them or not, and I don't want to record to them without knowing.

Does anybody know anything about Mitsubishi turntables? I found one at a thrift store today, branded 'MGA' with some stuff about being built in Great Britain written on the platter. It has an integrated receiver and speed settings for 16s, 33s, 45s, and 78s. The front of the case said it was a model ST-20, but the badge on the rear says it's an SK-20. It works but needs cleaned up quite badly, and I'd like to know what I'm getting into before I start pulling it apart.
Took this as a reference photo before I go any deeper, but thought I'd share it anyway. The belt I already pulled off was in bad shape, but not so bad that I think it's the cause of my problems. I suspect this is more of a lubrication issue.

Finally got to get hands on my reel to reel! It's a Sony TapeCorder TC-355. Unfortunately, it does not work. It does power on, but there's no movement from the spindles.
Can't wait to get some time to open this thing up!

Fantastic find at the thrift store today - a portable multiband receiver! It's not in the best shape but is mostly functional as is, and it looks like schematics and service manuals are readily available.

Current status: relaxing with a record on (from my newly alphabetized collection!)
I have to say, all of the recent King Crimson pressings I've had so far are just out of this world. Especially compared with a lot of recent pressings which are total crap.

@Macabre_ish Yeah it was my version of being a cat rescuer. I would bring home abandoned AV equipment. Child and a NY appt put a stop to that. Tho I would still jump at one of those combo 8-track/reel to reels if I ever see one. #vintagehifi #8track
