Last in the 'Mick Travis Trilogy'. There was something to offend and upset almost everyone - in the UK, that is; the reviews on the poster are all from the US - in this scathing portrait of 1980s Britain: Royalists/Republicans; Tories/Labour; Unions/Management... I think it's a mini masterpiece.

Here's one *nobody* ever saw, because Hammer Films didn't know what to do with it. They thought they were getting a quickie horror film about mutant kids and biker gangs. Instead they ended up with this haunting, downbeat look at abuse of power and lost innocence. A real shame it's not better known.

Fifth and sixth heist movies. In which two bank employees are menaced by robbers. Cash on Demand (1961) has villain who's smartly dressed and thoroughly urbane and menaces with words. The Silent Partner (1979) has Christopher Plummer as a psychopath so unsettling he'd scare paint off a wall.

Fourth heist movie. This 1955 film is almost a soap, looking at the lives and secrets of all the characters who'll be involved in the bank robbery at the end. Today it would be a 10-episode Netflix series. Here it's all wrapped up in a brisk and (still) gripping 90 minutes!

Filmed on a micro budget, this relies more on suggestion than jab-it-in-your-eye special effects. Although when they're used, they're good. Not least at the climax, when all our thoughts about the 'monsters' get turned on their head.
