So, I’ve been reading Civil War era ladies’ magazines all day, and I found something that surprised me. It’s a kebab recipe from 1863 Philadelphia.

This appeared in the wildly popular periodical Godey’s Lady’s Book, which at this time had 150,000 subscribers all over the States. Curry powder, ghee, ginger, and lemon peel—19th century food wasn’t as bland as you’d think
