This is a curious record. Its called Vora and it is by Raulsson (Raul Pastor Medall). Produced by Nils Frahm and released by Sonicpieces, it is lovely to listen to and look at. I suppose you'd call it modern composition - very closely mike-ed piano and languid strings. The sleeve has a cut out panel filled with cloth, making it tricky to photo. It's on streaming services. Give it a shot.

For me this is British jazz at its most British. There are hints of New Orleans here, but it owes as much to folk music as it does to bop. Unique and brilliant. Laura Jurd is a tremendous leader. The closing minutes are so good they make me laugh out loud.

The band had no idea they were being recorded, let alone that the recordings from this date in Antwerp in 2016 would be released as a live album. Maybe that's why they sound so relaxed and focused, so completely lost in the music.

Graduates of the academy that was the Stanko band, these three are fabulous together.

I was confused by this record when I bought it recently, largely by the mismatch between Wheeler's serene brass band sensibilities and avant garde-ist Evan Parker blowing the living shit out of his horn in full turbo, circular breathing mayhem mode. Having listened to it every day for ten days, I've concluded it's one of the most musically adventurous and brilliant records I've ever heard.

This is new to me. I thought there was one player of multiple simultaneous saxes but it seems Roland Kirk wasn't alone. Playing on borrowed horns (his had been stolen) and with a borrowed drummer (his was ill), George Braith cuts an imposing, convincing figure. This is a quartet at ease, playing only what serves the music. Green, as you'd expect, is excellent. Gardner's organ by turns fills in and stretches out. Great stuff.
