“She thought there were no Gods; no one was to blame; and so she evolved this atheist's religion of doing good for the sake of goodness.” — Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway
Stream of consciousness writing is a wild ride of thoughts and feelings. This style of writing shows so much more of each character.

bay, and there, sure enough,
coming regularly across the
waves first two quick strokes
and then one long steady stroke,
was the light of the Lighthouse.
It had been lit."

WoolfWorks: possibly the best 2 pages of Orlando, where he meets Queen Elizabeth for the first time.
'By the same showing, the Queen herself can have seen only a head. But if it is possible from a hand to deduce a body, informed with all the attributes of a great Queen, her crabbedness, courage, frailty, and terror, surely a head can be as fertile, looked down upon from a chair of state by a lady whose eyes were always, if the waxworks at the Abbey are to be trusted, wide open.'

“I can sit alone by an open window for hours if I like, and hear only bird songs, and the rustle of leaves.” Virginia Woolf.

We have national votings in #Spain soon. Some local #fascists ruling in coalition with not-so-far-right are censoring plays by #VirginiaWoolf or movies like "Lightyear"(sigh) Please if you have Spanish friends ask them to vote on July 23rd. We need to stop these bastards to move along as social and kind human beings. Thank you #antifa #elecciones23J #23J :pacman1: :pacman2: :pacman2: :pacman2:

WoolfWorks: the death of a chicken
'Although wizened and unsteady on her legs she kept up the chase, egged on by the laughter of the others; her face was expressive of furious rage, and as she ran she swore in Spanish. ...The bird...finally fluttered straight at the old woman, who opened her scanty grey skirts to enclose it, dropped upon it in a bundle, and then, holding it out, cut its head off with an expression of vindictive energy and triumph combined.'

WoolfWorks: #writing advice (amidst flirting) from #VirginiaWoolf to Vita Sackville-West:
'But a novel, as I say, to be good should seem, before one writes it, something unwriteable: but only visible; so that for nine months one lives in despair, and only when one has forgotten what one meant, does the book seem tolerable. I assure you, all my novels were first rate before they were written.'
Hellow todas y todos ! 😅

WoolfWorks: The Voyage Out, #VirginiaWoolf 's debut novel from 1915, when she was 33. (her novel-writing career had a surprisingly late start.) it plants quite a few seeds that mature in later books -- hours, moths, even the Dalloways, who made their first appearance here.
'The clock, which had been wheezing for some minutes like an old man preparing to cough, now struck nine...'

daily VW: for writers in need of a pep talk
'As for fame, look I implore you at famous people; see how the waters of dullness spread around them as they enter; observe their pomposity, their prophetic airs...'

daily VW: sometimes historical aspect of these entries is fascinating. like this description of moth-hunting by night, from 1899.
the moths are lured by smearing trees with a sugary substance laced with rum, which makes them dozy & easier to catch.
'A temperance preacher would find the text for many sermons here then--the Devil in disguise--with his beer pot empty in one hand--his poison pot in t'other--but let such moralisings be reserved for the preacher's mouth.'
daily VW: this entry from 1899 (when #VirginiaWoolf was 17 years old) doesn't have any witty sentences for me to pull out. (other than maybe 'what an awful sentence!') but there's something about that image of VW reading a book while lying in the bottom of a boat that sums up her life in one stroke. just that thin layer between her & the water.
this is also around the time she starts taking the diary more seriously as an exercise, & it's just kind of neat to watch her grow.

daily VW: bigger city, bigger library, which had the less famous *early* diaries of #VirginiaWoolf , dating from when she was only 14. this is a time period that's usually associated with peak Sad Virginia imagery, where she's gazing despondently out of a window like a damsel who's about to curl up and die. so it's an interesting discovery, to see so many entries where she's out zipping around on her bike in the muck, complaining about crappy British weather.

Ergh, 52 pages into my first #VirginiaWoolf book (Orlando) and I come across the n word. Then Googled 'was Virginia Woolf racist' and the first link was a New Yorker article titled 'The Time Virginia Woolf Wore Blackface'.
Sigh.
I cannot decide which book to start next. Can someone decide for me, please? #JohannaHedva #CatherineLacey #VirginiaWoolf #bookstodon
