El trabajo ha permitido, además, la reconstrucción casi completa del genoma del virus en cuatro de ellos a partir de dientes y huesos humanos.

La viruela ya circulaba ampliamente en el año 600 en esa región y, por lo tanto, en el resto del continente. Esto refuta las afirmaciones de que el virus solo se introdujo y fue endémico después de la época medieval.
