Today's #PhotoOfTheDay takes us to Gotland in Sweden.
Visby has a large number of ruined churches but the one that I found the most beautiful was the Gothic S:ta Karin ruin (Saint Catherine's ruin). Originally constructed by the Franciscan Order in the 13th century but never completed it was dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria.

There is a lot of debate on who or what it actually depicts as the symbology is radically different than what we would expect. Comparisons have been made to the Snake Goddess from Crete, the late #Celtic Gundestrup cauldron, #Medusa, the Celtic god #Cernunnos, and others, but we simply cannot know for certain.
