My trusty straw hat, bought in Florence in 2009, is starting to show signs of age. I've tried to close the hole, despite the large amount of straw that went missing during my holidays in France. It's neat but not very pretty. Maybe it's time to crochet myself a hat, from a Japanese pattern, with the recommended yarn (received when I was blogging, pre-2016)?

Kind of wonder how #VisibleMending #embroidery is done (without fancy expensive machines).
I'm more familiar with sewing it back together when possible and otherwise patching over it...

I thought I'd finish up a simpler #FallFinishAlong to get into the spirit. My kid spilled lingonberry jam down the front of this sweater awhile back and I couldn't get the stains out, so I covered the awkward red blotches with some embroidered planets. I thought I just had the green planet to finish, but when that was done, I felt it "needed" one more to balance the orbits. But that meant that I didn't fall-finish this one today either. Tomorrow!

another #visiblemending project, sashiko-influenced rather than boro this time around; a button fell off and took a chunk of threadbare fabric w/ it so I reinforced the area while reattaching the button; while I like the variegated thread on its own I'm unsure whether the effect is a little too hippie-forward for my tastes; I may colourmatch better or go traditional monochrome in future projects
A little more #visiblemending - back to school edition! The elastic at the top of the water bottle pockets on the outsides of both of my kids' backpacks got stretched out, which made the pockets pretty useless. I've tackled this a couple of different ways, and thought it might be useful to someone if I post. The first thing I tried was cutting away the stretched elastic and replacing it with fold-over elastic. It works great and doesn't look bad, but it was a pain in the butt to do. (1/?)
T regularly rips the knees out of his pants, so I do a loooot of mending. I mostly do a sort of boro-inspired simple running stitch because otherwise I wouldn't get them fixed before he outgrows them, plus I can't really fit my hands into the pant legs for anything much fancier. But this time I thought I'd do something a little cuter and embroidered a purely decorative little cat face patch to put on the pocket. I'm pleased with the result! And so is he, thankfully. #visiblemending
Gray cashmere sweater with 19 tiny cashmere patches, stitched with silk and cotton embroidery floss because cute cashmere sweaters deserve to be saved. The patches are from another old cashmere sweater that I washed and dried in a hot dryer to shrink it. When cashmere is fully shrunk and felted, you can cut it and the edges won’t frey very easily, making it perfect for patches.

@NatureMC - So awesome that you give workshops in #visiblemending!
I feel like there needs to be a cultural shift that encourages people to think buying vintage and holding onto quality items as long as possible is the height of fashion. But how to help drive such a cultural shift? 🤔
I actually wrote a blog post about it a while back if you're interested in checking it out:

Purple cashmere hoodie with 32 tiny cashmere patches, stitched with silk embroidery floss because purple cashmere deserves to be saved. The patches are from another old cashmere sweater that I washed to shrink it and then dyed purple (because the world will never create enough purple cashmere), which is why the patches slightly vary in color. When cashmere is fully shrunk and felted, you can cut it and the edges won’t frey very easily, making it perfect for patches.

I have this loose, grey, short-sleeved pullover that I really like. It's old and a bit shabby and it had a hole. So I embroidered a patch on a scrap of fabric and sewed it over the hole. It took a good long while and probably cost more than just buying a new damn sweater, but I love it, and I am very proud of it. #embroidery not sure this counts as #VisibleMending
My top takeaways from War on Waste 3.
- Don’t buy new clothes unless you’ll wear them at least 30 times
- Wear visibly mended clothes as a sustainability statement
- Pharmaceutical companies in Australia can recycle blister packs. They just don’t. Yet.

Attempting to patch a hole in this shirt using the #visiblemending techniques from this book. A friend in textile studies tricked me into using a blanket stitch rather than the basic running stitch traditionally used and (I should have known better) now this is taking 4x longer! ... I begrudgingly concede that it will be more secure, however.

After the single strands of variegated cotton thing didn't work out, I'm trying cross-stitch floss.
I'm not sure it's going well 🤷♀️

@Br3nda I'm using coloured felt scraps to patch my fine merino.

@naatschn Guten Morgen bzw. guten Vormittag! ☕
