Modified Wheatstone stereoscope I designed and built sometime in 2017. Dual monitor setup with reflecting mirrors to fuse the images when viewed from the chin rest, resulting in a high resolution stereoscopic image. Used to study depth perception in a laboratory environment

Long shot but here goes. Anyone know of any available LCD shutter glass systems which use the VESA stereo port (see link)? RealD doesn't seem to sell CrystalEyes systems anymore which I used for research in the past

@prereview

I was asked to review this paper last year for inclusion in the journal "Developmental Science" and agreed on the condition that I could share my review publicly, and they asked that I wait until the article had been published. It now has!

doi.org/10.1101/2022.06.06.494

Brilliant paper, give it a read if you're into !

Flipping through the VSS program is making me teary eyed. So many great people I used to know in vision science. Don't see much of them after leaving academia

Thought I'd share my preprint, "Mapping visual working memory models to a theoretical framework." psyarxiv.com/g8erx

It's a commentary on the state of theory development in my research area of visual working memory (perhaps unusual from an early-career researcher!). It's also my first solo paper – very much looking for feedback!

Are you attending the Vision Sciences Society meeting? Got an experiment idea in the works and looking for feedback? Submit to the pre-data collection poster session – present your theory, research design and methods to your peers and get advice at an earlier stage of the process when it would be more useful! On my way this month to the ARVO 2023 Vision Science Meeting. (Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.)

My lab's three abstracts for this meeting are:

Development of an Ophthalmic Therapeutic, Noregen,
with the NEI SBIR / STTR Program.

Custom Gene Panel Sequencing of FEVR Patients and Family Members.

Early Permeability of Primary Human Retinal Endothelial Cells via the p38-MAPK and AKT Signaling Pathways

Just woke up from my first ever conference nightmare. Couldn't find my room, had to wear mismatched socks, had to leave my kid unattended, lost my glove, my session was in a different day than I thought, arrived too late to it, moderator was giving me the evil eye, and my poster had printed wrong so it was an A4 size with tiny tiny letters and figures just at the top. BUT the poster format was kind of brilliant. The poster was attached to a stick and then all presenters walked around, waving their poster around like a flag. Much more effective in attracting attention I am sure. We should change this.

Another sequencing run started here in the ERI at Oakland University. For samples of patients with rare pediatric inherited retinal diseases. Using this Illumina iSeq-100, we can pool many samples and target sequence several genes associated with FEVR (Familial Exudative Vitreo-Retinopathy), Norrie Disease, Persistent Fetal Vascular Syndrome, and Retinoschisis. With support from the Prediatric Retinal Research Foundation and the Carl's Foundation of Michigan, no families pay anything for our research testing.

Wow. In 24 hours, we have gone from zero to 4.4K followers, that‘s crazy. Thank you for a warm welcome and excellent tips. I gave up on replying to all of you after someone pointed out that I was spamming thousands of people – sorry! Also, please do not read too much into it if we do not respond or take a long time responding, we are a busy bunch and may simply sometimes miss your post or messages. Mastodon allows long posts so I am taking advantage of that, so here are a few things that you may – or may not – want to know.

—Who are we?—

Research in the Icelandic Vision Lab (visionlab.is) focuses on all things visual, with a major emphasis on higher-level or “cognitive” aspects of visual perception. It is co-run by five Principal Investigators: Árni Gunnar Ásgeirsson, Sabrina Hansmann-Roth, Árni Kristjánsson, Inga María Ólafsdóttir, and Heida Maria Sigurdardottir. Here on Mastodon, you will most likely be interacting with me – Heida – but other PIs and potentially other lab members (visionlab.is/people) may occasionally also post here as this is a joint account. If our posts are stupid and/or annoying, I will however almost surely be responsible!

—What do we do?—

Current and/or past research at IVL has looked at several visual processes, including , , , , , , and the role of / effects in . Some of our work concerns the basic properties of the workings of the typical adult . We have also studied the perceptual capabilities of several unique populations, including children, synesthetes, professional athletes, people with anxiety disorders, blind people, and dyslexic readers. We focus on but also make use of other techniques including , , and

—Why are we here?—

We are mostly here to interact with other researchers in our field, including graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and principal investigators. This means that our activity on Mastodon may sometimes be quite niche. This can include boosting posts from others on research papers, conferences, or work opportunities in specialized fields, partaking in discussions on debates in our field, data analysis, or the scientific review process. Science communication and outreach are hugely important, but this account is not about that as such. So we take no offence if that means that you will unfollow us, that is perfectly alright :)

—But will there still sometimes be stupid memes as promised?—

Yes. They may or may not be funny, but they will be stupid.

@icevislab You are very welcome to the party. all sounds very interesting. My son had an optic nerve glioma and to cut long story short is now blind. I wonder about his sense of the very visual world we inhabit although that in part as am a Photography student.

Musk is awful isn't he? Welcome!

Anyway, there's no search function on here so that means you need to # everything. It's very early noughties tumblr isn't it? I'll get you started!

As your Mr T is also keen on he might want you to remember to use Camel Case on the Tags (the capitals) and put alt-text for images.
