Me, speaking at my usual rollicking pace, about the history of from pre-photography to post-digitization, in this podcast episode on the Library Channel on the New Books network. Have a listen and see (or rather, hear) if you can spot where I call a famous writer and director by the wrong name 😆🙈

“They are after-images, burnt into screens and retinas long after their source has been erased. They perform a psychoanalysis without either psyche or analysis for an age of automation in which production is augmented by wholesale fabrication. Mean images are social dreams without sleep, processing society’s irrational functions to their logical conclusions. They are documentary expressions of society’s views of itself, seized through the chaotic capture and large-scale kidnapping of data. And they rely on vast infrastructures of polluting hardware and menial and disenfranchised labour, exploiting political conflict as a resource.”

✨ On Friday May 19, you can attend a (free) hybrid conference titled "Historical Fragments: Making, Breaking and Remaking" hosted by The Material and Visual Culture in the 17th and 18th Centuries Research Cluster, University of Edinburgh.

The conference "considers the materiality and shifting conditions of global objects and collections (focusing on the time period 1500-1800) as they are broken, fragmented, remade, or assembled. Seeking to investigate the ‘brokenness’ of such material culture objects and collections, the conference will de-centre conservation and restoration which often dominate discourse on the subject. The Research Cluster aims to provide a space to foster interdisciplinary discussion on the material approaches to fragmented objects through material culture."

Here goes, my first attempt at : I'm professor of at , the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, where I head up the fledgling research group Media, Data, Museums. As a photo historian with a background in professional picture research, I study the labour, systems, technologies, and that underpin visual culture from the early 1800s to the present. More of a media antiquarian than a media archaeologist. I'm the author of Picture Research: The Work of Intermediation from Pre-Photography to Post-Digitization – forthcoming from MIT Press in June 2023. In real life I'm quite loud; on social media I'm usually quiet.
– oh yeah and (if I have to)

Are there any good articles (or even books) on the history of Âťmood boardsÂŤ as used in design and advertising? All I could find so far is this piece, which is nice but leaves a lot to be desired ...
