Both my housemates have been asked to vacate. For reasons I can't get into. But instead of leaving in a civilised manner, one of them left me with menstrual blood stains and black mould. Piles of rubbish, food waste, fast-food containers, and mountains of snotty tissues. All of which I have to clean up in order to have the room ready for a new housemate.

This is my first vlog, and it is lo-fi all the way! I shall try and improve my skills. So I apologise for the occasion thumb as I try to get footage as I sift through human detritus and fast food containers.

The truth is I've been wanted to start a vlog for ages, but have been nervous about it. Though I never would have thought to begin here, it seems like it's a good place to start. I feel like maybe sharing this sort of behaviour will make the burden of it a little less.

I'm long-term unemployed, I rent, and I've been given notice to vacate my rental.

Rent and bond in advance, packing costs, travel costs for inspections, and finally moving cost, including final carpet and garden professional finishes are beyond my being able to save. I live like so many people, fortnight to fortnight, and there's nothing extra to put aside. Especially when these things will come in between $4000 and $6000 dollars, depending greatly on where I end up moving to.

The clock is ticking for me, my little dog, and my adopted reptile rescues.

I would love to do in-vehicle travel photos/videos of my lovely locale, but the gear I see recommended by the vloggers I've followed have been way the F out of my price range. Been checking out older-model GoPros and similar as budget options, though those would still be a $ stretch for a still-prospective hobby. Suggestions welcome!

Today I posted my first video on Instagram.

And the algorithm rewarded me. I was made very welcome as it told others I'd arrived. I guess it was an experiment to see if I'd feel like sharing more.

Years ago, maybe 15 years, 5 years before the likes of Vine and it's ilk, the video blogging community was thriving in places void of nefarious algorithms.

Simple post and respond sites. Short video moments shared around the world connecting people. Yes it was addictive. But it wasn't because the platform told us to share. It was because we were connecting in richer, deeper ways than ever before.

The servers filled with stories, thoughts, conversations and those little moments that make us human.

When you care about the community, you care about you're interactions and the shared culture that develops.

Then it was all turned off and with little notice those moments were lost. Deleted with the context, replies and metadata. If it wasn't for some tech savvy members of the community I'd have lost over 6000 videos.

Some were saved but much is missing. The glue that held them all together is gone.

Since then I have always asked the platform I'm sharing to, how long they plan protect the stories. It's not normally something they have thought about.

And so those that remember, care less, share less, and alongside the dark patterns and manipulative algorithms we hold something back.
