@destrow managed to find a pretty sweet deal on a couple server chassis, so now I get to have the fun of configuring #Proxmox onto them to add to our Veracious Network cluster. I'm still undecided on how much memory I want to load up, (they support 3TB each), but right now I'm contemplating the storage.

We picked up some cheap 1TB drives from #Microcenter which I'll be loading in (configured in 2x raid-5, or raid-10.... whatever it's called), but was curious about what other folks in the community do for your #SMB / #Homelab hypervisors.

Do you add all the storage into the system partition to have one giant '/' mount, or do you add a second storage pool of dedicated disks separate from the OS?

Historically I've kept them separate, but Proxmox sets up a 'Local' pool on the system partition by default, which got me wondering if I'm just making it unnecessarily complicated. (Though I still think having a separate data pool makes disaster recovery easier.)

The article I published this morning on the old #NetBSD server is gaining some traction, which pleases me greatly.

#NetBSD is a top-notch operating system and deserves more recognition.

In the interest of fairness, I'd like to diversify the operating systems for the services of BSD Cafe, aiming to utilize them all. This will mean moving from using just jails to full-blown VMs. I'll ponder over this in the upcoming days.

Meanwhile, today we're touring our beautiful Ferrara, and it's the Ferrara Buskers Festival, the street performers' festival. It's still quite warm, but more bearable today. Wishing you a continued pleasant day!

Bei mir läuft die erste Option seit einem Jahr und bin semi-zufrieden. Würde gerne zur Proxmox Variante wechseln, weiß aber, dass das von TrueNAS nicht offiziell unterstützt wird. #itsupport

Good evening again, friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse!

Today, I continued with the migration of about fifteen #VMs from the client's internal #Proxmox datacenter to an external one. I didn't notify them, so they probably won't notice anything tomorrow. Next weekend, I'll proceed with the other servers and complete the operation. I'm documenting everything for a blog post.

I also made some changes to the openbsdjournal bot (@openbsdjournal) as it was pointed out that the output was ugly.

Now, it should be better, and the first test will be tonight in about half an hour. Let's see how it turns out.

I did some gardening too, but the grass was damp, and I was eaten alive by mosquitoes (ah, the Po Valley!).
It's going to rain again tonight.

Meanwhile, I generally enjoy #Markdown syntax. It is comfortable, and similar to the way I wrote #email and #notes in #PlainText ever since those college #VAX #VMS days.

#Emacs has always felt a bit scary or unapproachable. This goes back to hearing about it college, when people were probably talking about it on #VAX #VMS systems.

@stefano First contact with actual Unix was in '91 - online; I had access to account on one of .uni servers, which run #Sun #SunOS. I had to jump from #VMS student account to privileged professors one, then access X.25, go to internet gateway and you are on tcp/ip. Just jump to .uni, login, and voilà - SunOS (on another continent!)

Then I had some exposure to Ultrix, but local .edu VMS was far more interesting :D

Then around year 2K I started to realize that I can build Linux server with a lot of functionality of very expensive Apple Server for about $0 cost. My choice, at the time was Mandrake.

Then, a few years later, I discovered FreeBSD (6) and it's my firewall, router, nas, desktop (my personal desktop is #FreeBSD 13.2-STABLE / #KDE) or server for any purpose - OS of choice for any role.

Hummm... My old adversary, #KevinMitnick died.

I'll never be asked to contribute to his #obituary but he was the best #Social #Engineer I ever knew and I think he'd have been pleased to hear that -- So if he faked his death just to get that out of me, you are still a bastard, Mr Mitnick!

I've built a PoC #mp4 meta tag editor for the #browser in vanilla #javascript that pretends to run in a #crt #terminal. Pretty stupid combo, I know :-) But I had a lot of fun building it!

(It's meant to be used with #m4a #audio files but seems to work with video too and it requires a browser with the File System Access API enabled.)

I respectfully disagree. Your conclusion is a non sequitur.

Whilst it's true i don't let my host #ArchLinux go a month between updates [simply coz i want all the new stuff, gimme gimme now! 😜 ], i only update several guest #Arch & #Archie #VMs monthly. They're invariably fine too.

The simple precaution of reading/applying any applicable News actions, & routinely checking for updated #keyring pkgs prior to performing the -Syu, stands one in fairly good stead.

`sudo pacman --needed --noconfirm -S archlinux-keyring && paru -Syu && yay -Sua`.

@ablackcatstail Atm am working my way thru all my #QEMU / #KVM #VMs doing their monthly updates, in my #ArchLinux host. Tis all going gangbusters, as usual. 🎉
