General question: how much art/ color do you want or need to see in your rulebooks?

Having been in the hobby forever I don’t want the 8 point type blown out to the edge of the paper design back but I feel the production values of say #VnV 2e and #DnD B/X are really sufficient to teach the game and provide visual landmarks in the book to remember where things are.

Maybe some full color plates if there are totally new visual concepts.

Am I weird in this?

@tinstargames doubly weird as a) #VnV has rules for “if you have an idea just make that Pc” and b “feel free to modify anything you do roll.”

Another dude insisted that you could write up the character you wanted BUT the moment you rolled any dice you were 100% committed to full randomness, powers exactly as written in book. in one PBEM he submitted a PC where he had selected “Mutant Power” (a catch all for ‘power not in rulebook’) 6 times… to duplicate powers already in the rules

@tinstargames at the turn of the millennium I was on a #VillainsAndVigilantes message board touting how #VnV 2e’s random power tables were perfectly balanced to spark ideas for characters. An new poster informed me that any use of randomness was actively abusing my players and I was a horrible person.

3-4 of my players were also regulars on the board who responded “what the hell are you talking about?!”

“I didn’t mean Brian specifically. Just people like him.”

Getting to Know Me, Tabletop RPG Edition

14: Favorite memorable object one of your characters owned: Hmmmmm… so my longest running PC in #VnV was Legerdemain, an alien warrior-priest with magnetic powers. One of his “powers” in V&V terms was his Vehicle, a metal flying disk he could stand on (and carry someone on) for elevation and locomotion, use as a shield, compress to the size of a frisbee for throwing or storage. Loved that thing.

8: Favorite TTRPG for its art: Call me a fanboy, but it’s gonna be #VnV 2E. The unified, sharp line style of Jeff Dee’s work throughout the book really sold it as being a comic book game. All supers gamers from the early days have their preferred system as LOTS of experimentation was being done in that genre, but V&V’s art was head and shoulders over everyone else until #FASERIP Marvel entered the picture.

3: Published NPC that had a lasting impression on you: This one’s even harder. All of my groups were DIY world designs, even when we did borrow from published worlds. As a GM I drew the most inspiration from the opponents in V&V’s _Most Wanted: Volume 1_
