The Good Mother

How is it right,
kids are treated this way.
Beaten, abused
and expected to stay.

But how is it right,
kids are removed.
From land, and community
and cultural views.

How is it right,
these kids aren’t in bed.
That they’re roaming the streets
On a crime wave instead

But how is it right,
that children so young,
are sent to detention.
Can they know what they’ve done?
.
How is it right,
these kids aren’t in schools.
But how is it right,
the schools have white rules.
.
Where are the parents?
Aren’t they to blame?
But the parents were children,
who were treated the same.

I don’t have an answer.
There seems no easy choice.
But I know true discussion,

Maybe the locals,
should just pull up their socks.
And learn to be grateful,
for all that they’ve got.

You think I enjoy,
going to work every day.
I don’t! … I can tell you.
I just need the pay.

I work and I struggle,
and I wonder what for.
While white collared privilege,
Says you deserve more.

But maybe you fight
The same as I do.
And maybe my fight,
Is not really with you.

I do understand
You’ve got a hard stick.
The poverty cycle,
of violence and drink.

Family with needs,
as long as your arms.
Hounded by coppers,
while doing no harm.

Untrained, unemployed
unwelcome, unwell.
Dispossessed, powerless
With no one to tell

I think I’m afraid,
of what Voice means.
If they have a Voice,
who will listen to me?

Will policies bend?
forced to listen to them.
And if it’s enshrined,
will the bend ever end.

Blah, blah, blah.
You good sons owe this.
Will the Voice turn out to be
Just an endless wish list.

Why should they have a party
Like some prodigal son
Why do they deserve more,
What have they ever done?

But what if I’m wrong
