I've had the great privilege of visiting the place mentioned in the original post, Volcanos National Park in Rwanda. Went on a hike up a mountain with guides to see the Highland Gorillas there. They're absolutely amazing. They live in an extended-family group with individuals of all sizes and ages.
Some were acting playfully and trying to get our attention, but others were clearly keeping a wary eye on us (even though we were keeping at a safe and respectful distance) in case they needed to step-in to protect the group from strangers.
I was on the tail-end of the group, and as we were leaving, I saw a Silverback who'd been quite defensive-looking had positioned itself between its group and our group. It stretched and relaxed, and caught my eye to let me know it was seeing-off our group. It was a very human gesture, and made it plain to see how closely related gorillas and humans are.
