British geologist HH Read once said the best geologist is the one who has “seen the most rocks.” So perhaps the best possible understanding of #Kilauea hinges on the most observations. #HVO reflects on two centuries of written records in #VolcanoWatch.

The history of Kaluapele (#Kilauea caldera) includes periods of rising lava within Halemaʻumaʻu, often to the point of overflowing. #DYK the highest level of lava in the past 2 centuries was reached in the first few months of 1894? #Kilauea June 7 data: A rapid increase in EQs as pressure builds & rocks break. Lava bursts from ground & a conduit is established. Volcanic tremor (movement of fluid) becomes the dominant signal. #VolcanoWatch https://www.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/news/volcano-watch-reflections-recent-eruptions #volcano #usgs

With no ground-based instruments nearby, AVO scientists used remote sensing (InSAR) to reveal inflation at Mount Edgecumbe (AK). InSAR & EQs suggest influx of magma at depth (no eruption imminent). Fieldwork & studies continue.

Geoscience is full of tools to investigate the past. But one important tool can sometimes be overlooked: oral history. Good stories are usually rooted in real events. Five years ago, volcanic activity at #Kilauea dramatically changed when magma intruded into the lower East Rift Zone (#LERZ). #HVO reflects on the destructive 2018 eruption in this week’s #VolcanoWatch. https://www.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/news/volcano-watch-five-years-flow-reflections-destructive-2018-eruption-kilauea #volcano #usgs

The first of #USGS’ family of 5 volcano observatories began with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory in 1912. Back then, Hawaii wasn't a state & Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park didn't exist. #HVO reflects on 111 years of history, in this week’s #VolcanoWatch https://www.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/news/volcano-watch-todays-family-five-usgs-volcano-observatories-began-hvo-over #volcano #usgs

Scientists are about to embark on a new #Kilauea research project that will help reveal shallow subsurface structures & places where bodies of magma are stored. Yes, it involves that big rig. More about the Kīlauea Seismic Imaging Project in #VolcanoWatch: usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/n…
April is Tsunami Awareness Month in Hawaii. Learn more from the International Tsunami Information Center: itic.ioc-unesco.org and head over to the Pacific Tsunami Museum in Hilo on April 22 (1-4 pm) for a free preparedness workshop. #VolcanoWatch: usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/n…
Laterally directed explosive eruptions can have devastating impacts. US & New Zealand researchers collected field-scale explosion data from 9 acoustic sensors surrounding a tiltable water cannon to understand energy dynamics of these events. #VolcanoWatch: usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/n…
Shiny and elusive, featherlight and golden-brown. How would you describe Pele’s hairs? But don’t be fooled. These are strands of volcanic glass & can pose a serious hazard. #HVO #VolcanoWatch: usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/n…
#HVO scientists are collaborating with academic colleagues to make geology field experiences more accessible for people who have been historically excluded, specifically those with disabilities. Learn about the GeoSPACE program in #VolcanoWatch: usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/n…
#HVO's buildings were damaged beyond repair during #Kilauea’s 2018 eruption but plans are underway for a new home in Hilo. Meet HVO staff & learn more:

What petrologists learned about #MaunaLoa: 2022 eruption fed by homogenous magma, likely a new intrusion in months prior to eruption. Nearly crystal-free, low-MgO eruption not influenced by rift-stored magma leftover from 1984. More in #VolcanoWatch: usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/n…
What happened to slow slip events on #Kilauea's south flank? #HVO scientists share how massive stress release from the M6.9 EQ (May 4, 2018) means the fault that produced SSEs needs time to build enough stress to start producing SSEs again: usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/n… #VolcanoWatch
Comparing #MaunaLoa 1984 to 2022: scientists & citizens awakened from slumber, similar seismicity, glow from summit, migration to NERZ. For both, no significant impacts to infrastructure. #HVO appreciates community awareness & preparedness. #VolcanoWatch usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/n…
