This morning, my first outing with the Jackson Heights Beautification Group, to take down holiday decorations at the post office.

Learned about requesting trees for empty tree beds!

Came home, ordered in Thai, took a nap, went out to do my 34th Ave Open Street Sweep.

Tonight, chores and chillin'.

A strength of local gov'ts ... one that states and the federal gov't don't have ... is the ease with which they can enlist citizens to do small but important tasks for the public good. Great example: the 2,800 volunteers who keep S.F.'s neighborhood storm drains from clogging. There’s always more to learn in this big, old world. This year I begin volunteer work at our local animal shelter. A couple of friends recommended the Fear Free Shelters program. It’s quite good. I appreciate practical, compassionate, animal stewardship techniques.

Today is distribution day at Steinhatchee’s food pantry. We serve 120 families today. 80 of those families are senior families. I’ve been a volunteer for seven years now. It takes about 15 of us to pull today off.

I have a meeting to do today and I don't want to. I'm the current soldier family readiness group leader for my husband's troop. Thus I have to attend steering meetings monthly. But we're changing units in January because they're dissolving our troop so it feels pointless to be in on planning anything. But I go.
