TN Rep. (D-Nashville) was ruled out of order and barred from speaking for the rest of the day. Yet another member of the same body was ruled out of order twice but was not silenced. Continuing to silence the voices of voters. , just another form. Good people not doing enough. failing to intervene at the root of the American democracy crisis.
needs to find another home. Cesspool with dead birds stink.

HM Government wants to extend voter ID laws - despite Ree-Smugg admitting they were an attempt to manipulate elections. It’s a stitch up. We say: DITCH VOTER ID before the next General Election. 38d.gs/4edb

Local elections 2023: Voters express anger at ID rule changes bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65492275

So easy to be wise after the event, but how many disappointed or disenfranchised people lobbied their MP or protested as this was going through our “democratic” process?

I wrote twice to our (Tory, spineless) MP even though we didn’t have local elections.

I wonder if Labour will commit to unwinding this if/when they get in power?

& ban poll station “tellers”

@GottaLaff @joyannreid I'm often Arizona-centric, it's where I live: Sinema receives both above & below table from Harlan Crow. Her protection of rich bigoted Whites since 2019 is in service to her biggest donors. I don't see much difference between Sinema and whichever Republicans want to replace her in the Senate, lip service notwithstanding.
I support Ruben Gallego for Senate 2024.

"Staff running local elections in May risk being “overwhelmed” by bureaucracy and complaints before and on polling day because of new rules requiring all voters to produce photo ID in order to cast their ballots.

"The warning has been issued by the Local Government Association (LGA) amid rising concern that the requirements are too strict, and inadequate preparation has been done to inform voters that the rules have changed …

"Critics of the reform, including the main opposition parties, estimate that the change will mean more than a million voters being “disenfranchised” because they don’t have photo ID such as a passport or driving licence, or find out too late to apply for a voter authority certificate (VAC), which will be accepted as a substitute.

"Senior Labour figures have complained that the new system is rigged in favour of the Tories because it offers more ways for older voters to satisfy ID requirements, such as, in London, allowing over-60s Oyster cards to be used, while Oyster cards for younger people will not be permitted."

"A running total on a government website showed that as of the end of Sunday, just under 21,000 applications had been submitted in total, only 1% of the estimated 2 million voters who do not possess the necessary documents already.

"Just 2.4% of these were from voters aged 75 or older, 505 in total, despite this demographic being among the least likely to possess a passport or driving licence – although several older people’s travel cards will also be accepted.

"Only 1,237 people aged under 25 had applied. Younger people are also less likely to have photo ID that can be used to vote, especially as the government has decided that student cards and young people’s travel passes are not valid."

The above data is from a central portal. People can also apply by post or in person, but few have done so. Photo ID is supposedly intended to prevent voter impersonation—a hugely rare offence.

"Trump’s election fraud commission, appointed early in his presidency, was forced to fold in just a couple of months because they could find no evidence of voter fraud in 2016.

The real problem Americans face in elections is ongoing efforts to suppress the voting rights of people who are fully entitled and qualified to vote."

"But the allegations were always hollow, for instance in Alabama, where Republican-appointed U.S. Attorneys chased every accusation that was made for the eight years of the George W. Bush administration without finding anything of significance.

The Big Lie put the old trope on steroids, a Trump-sized version of the voter fraud complaints Republicans trotted out every election cycle. But none of it is true."

Joyce Vance writes,

"The myth of rampant voter fraud, along with the insinuation that 'others'—Black people, immigrants, felons—are somehow responsible for it, was circulated by Republicans long before Trump took to the political stage. It was a mainstay in the Deep South."

@pbump “…the number of Hispanics who vote has not grown at the same pace as the Hispanic population itself. In part, this is a function of citizenship; a fifth of the state’s Hispanics weren’t citizens in 2019. We can expect a similar disparity nationally.”

"Ministers are intent on … introducing mandatory photo ID at local elections across England in May, despite a timetable so compressed that the Electoral Commission has warned the elections cannot be conducted properly."

Those with no ID are disproportionately marginalised, including old, homeless, and trans people.

The purported excuse for requiring ID to vote, impersonation, is in fact barely a problem.

"Concerns over the plan include that vulnerable voters could be disenfranchised, that staff will not be properly trained and that many voters will be unaware of the changes …

"Some opponents have argued that the measures are disproportionate to the threat of voter impersonation and accuse ministers of attempting to suppress the vote. There was only one conviction for voter impersonation at the 2017 election."
