It's #MPMonday and this #WHM23 we are looking at Jennie Lee. Elected MP for North Lanarkshire during a by-election in March 1929, Lee was just 24. The Equal Franchise Act (reducing the voting age to 21) didn't come into effect until the general election in May, making Lee below voting age when elected!

Larry Elder, a right-wing radio host, thinks that the government should raise the minimum voting age to forty because, according to him, the Democrats “push to amend [the] Constitution so 16-year-olds can vote.”

I’m not even joking…

Does he not know anything about American history? Does “no taxation without representation” ring a bell? Elder’s ideal America would have everyone eighteen to thirty-nine paying taxes without suffrage.

Interesting argument. I think there is a lot to be said for giving 16 year olds the vote, given they’re treated as adults in various other ways. And their future is far more affected by climate change etc.

My kids’ looks of wonder when they heard the #VotingAge had been lowered to 16 in Aotearoa. The conversation afterwards about how it was still 18 here. Their irritation. So now I’m thinking about what it would take to achieve it here before my kids turn 16.

I haven't seen this discussed much, but the #VotingAge issue is an equity issue, consider:
● Māori and Pacific peoples are a much younger population, statistically
● These groups have historically been disproportionately negatively affected by policies
● Research shows that people who don't vote younger (eg at their first eligible election) are much less likely to vote later on...

I fully support lowering the voting age, but I think some on the left may be overestimating the effect on election results.

For the Auckland local elections I handed my voting papers & candidate booklet to 14 asking; Who would you vote for? This was interesting. He downgraded problem but no solution candidates. Candidates with no obvious policy position. Candidates not discussing local issues. He also did research about his shortlist candidates. These were probably infulenced by his parents. But he added one other criterion "I don't like people who just talk about themselves" #VotingAge #NZPol #NZTwits
