we are actually still way back on season 3 of VOY so #InsideMan will be skipping forward quite a bit for us, but it’ll be fine. pressing play meow!!! #allstartrek #VOY
I finished 'Star Trek: Voyager' very quickly following the end of season 3. Seasons 4 through 6 were great, with a wee bit of a drop in quality in season 7. The finale actually hit the feels, and even 'Homestead' S07E24 tugged my heartstrings. Who knew by the end, I would feel Neelix's departure!? Voyagers continue to be vindicated. It was a super slow start, even more so than TNG, but by the end, it was a wild ride with some stellar Trekking.
I launched straight into 'Discovery'. I watched the first season back when it was released. And even then, without the immediacy of my TNG, DS9, VOY watch through, the show was jarring. Launching straight into it was near on shocking.
Even after having already watched the first season of 'Strange New Worlds', the early days of DISCO are hard going. Nothing about their retrofitting aids the story. Nothing. The story itself is already so outside of the Trek and Federation we know that it almost feels like it's trying to retro fit errors, which they were not. After the absolute fan fans like Worf, Martok, and B'Elana, what they did to the Klingons feels a bit, well, racist. I say that and mean it in both the context of the Trek universe and the real world. They did something that feels like devolving, animal-izing. Perhaps I'm not getting it right here, but it's an uncomfortable watch. I appreciate so much Klingon being spoken. It is an absolute travesty that the prosthetics detract from the pronunciation. Operas are written in this language that predate this war! The heresy!
In the same way, Burnham's connection to Sarek and Spock does not aid the story nor needs to be there. It's a big galaxay. Not everyone needs to be related. It's irritating, clout-chase-y and unimaginative.
It's a great looking production. I don't mind new species, nor what seems like a tech upgrade. It's not really that all the time. I like the idea of clandestine Star Fleet operations during war time. I like a "grittier" tone, not everything needs to be TNG. But this first season so rarely hits, it is a disservice to some great characters and performances, and the fictional history of our beloved Galaxy.
And so now I settle in for the slog before the gold.

Why have I never heard anyone talk about The Doctor and Seven Of Nine's duet singing 'You Are My Sunshine'?! This is Star Trek highlight! This is in my top 10 favourite Star Trek scenes ever!

Fun 'Star Trek: Voyager' watch-through update.
I ATE season 4 in quick fashion. I'm knee deep into season 5 now, watching 'Bride of Chaotica' S05E12, and am struck by just how much the likes of 'WandaVision' owe to Star Trek, as a whole, not just this fantastical example of an episode. How much Star Trek itself inherits from classic sci-fi serials and anthologies, comic, radio, film, and television, and how much it relishes that aspect of its own DNA. TOS IS classic sci-fi and I love that these 90s iterations never shied away from that inherently camp heritage.
'Voyager' finally feels like it's found that happy space the best of DS9 & TNG did between serious sci-fi, as they struggle to find a way home, and joyous, gloriously silly sci-fi what-if episodes of stand alone adventures. Characters able to enter both spaces, like Janeway has finally got a chance to, feel much more three-dimensional and fully fleshed out. And I like her more and more as a result.
I did not lament the loss of Kes, the not quiet two year old love interest was so poorly realised as a character. Her replacement, Seven of Nine, has gone miles in realising that other major thread of the Galaxay, the question of what being human means. I missed so much of her origin story and I'm glad I have the details now. I have thoughts about her costuming, saved for another day.
Dare I say it, Neelix is not even irritating, and there have been episodes where he is featured that have been wholly enjoyable. Notably, 'Once Upon a Time' S05E05, that really served to push the reality of the overarching narrative of having an ETA at home of 75 years, without shoving it in your face. It was subtle, emotional, and walked the line between the serious and silly very well.
As I've got 2.5 seasons to, I look forward to the series holding at this quality.

Ok, Voyagers be vindicated! Season 3 has been a fucking revelation. Some, honestly, top-shelf Trekking. They've managed to hit a host of familiar beats (like everything e05 through e09) but actually managed to do so well. And occasionally, with slight improvements. 'Future's End' is my favourite time travel episode of Star Trek so far. It's on par with DS9's best ('Past Tense' and 'Far Beyond The Stars') with an entirely different tone. One that I really appreciated. Time travel requires a little humour because it's absurd.
I also like that Janeway feels far more like a feature and not a lesser character in an ensemble.
Setting the Doctor free of sickbay feels like a series saving move. He's been a favourite character so far, but there's not been enough of him to let his character work in response to the others. The Doctor is a Data-esque character that needs to be in reflection or contrast to the other characters (and settings/situations) to really be appreciated. I hope it lives up to my expectations.
Stray appreciations: Added Captain Sulu, added Commander Janice Rand (Rand Stan's unite!), Chekotay and Janeway's most excellent power suits from 1996. I could do without Q, but no matter how hard I try, I can't hate him the way I want. Snaps to John de Lancie for giving the exact right vibes for that character every time. I can't wait to see him in @JessieGender's 'Identiteaze'. (Follower her, now!) And just before hitting post, fucking Susan Plaksin, my favourite half human, half Klingon, and personal vocal life goals, just showed up as Q. Boom!

Honestly, my Voyager watch through is becoming a life event. This series is fucking unhinged.
So I get past what has been described as the nadir, and settle in for 'Resistence', ' Prototype' and 'Alliances' (S02E12, 13 & 14). All solid episodes. A real upturn in quality.
And then-
BANG!
'Threshold' (S02E15).
And I will never be unable to unsee it.
Wet puppets do not save everything.

Oof.
Voyager season 2 episodes 9 and 10 are things that happened.
In the first, 'Tattoo', the exemplar is given for when Star Trek tries too hard, goes half-arsed and then adds "ancient humans? No, it was aliens!" narrative to a space exploration story. Which is three solid "oof!"s in one episode, which is impressive.
In the second, 'Cold Fire' the opening actually acknowledges that you've probably been sleeping through most episodes since s01e01, or didn't but forgot most of it entirely because your brain space is reserved for things less boring. Which is a series level "oof!". Extra impressive.
Oh, Gods above and below, save me! #Voyager watch through is fucking hard. What is it about this fucking series?! I'm at S02E06 and they're having a party and I don't give a shit about any of these characters, save maybe, surprisingly, Janeway. And she gets very little airtime comparatively speaking. They've scripted her like the ship's Mum. All their relationships feel so forced. Is it because this premise and character dynamic is so done to death already? Some of them are fucking horrid. Yes, I mean Neelix. The beginning of this season is so "the one with the Doctor"; "the one with Chekotay"; "the one with Kes"; "the one with Harry" and they all suck. The Doctor one was alright. What a waste of Barclay it was though. I dislike Kes. And there is no way in any quadrant of the Galaxy she and Neelix would be in a relationship. I also hate Chekotay. Besides the obvious, he's also terribly inconsistently characterised.
I am becoming fixated on Captain Janeway's 90s does Gibson Girl hairstyle. I remember being irritated by it when it aired, but now I'm like "this is the retro does vintage awesome I need to have more of in my life!"

A short list of things wrong with 'Star Trek: Voyager':
1. Neelix
2. The ship's warp nacelles
3. Fucking Neelix
4. Chekotay being Native American(TM) (Not that there's a damned thing wrong with being First Nations of Turtle Island, but damn did a cracker write that backstory!)
5. NEELIX!!!
6. B'elanna Torres' Klingon-ness being characterised by 'petulant child with a temper'
7. Neelix is still there after the first after episode?!
8. "Ma'am"
#startrek #voy #voyager #fuckneelix
I like Captain Janeway more than I thought I would. I remember now what it was that first set me against her, my first instinct was the same: "ma'am" in a crunch, never "sir". It still feels not quite as feminist as I think they were aiming for. I still have to take a minute to remember her first name, Kathryn. Spelled weird.
There really are some hard slow points in a Star Trek rewatch.

Author Author could have used some editing to smooth out the tone. First half is "Oh the Doctors' huge-ass ego! Oh we do have fun!" And then the second half is Measure of a Man for holograms.
It's *good*, and I like the contrast between the Doctor writing mean shit about his friends and the crew wholeheartedly supporting his right to write mean shit about them, but a little tonal consistency wouldn't be amiss :p #startrek #VOY
