I really fear what is becoming. , accept, decline some nonsense shit that many do not understand; , , , , policies, and other stupid rules that defending the world does not exist, etc. What has happened? How did we let it be? It is not the place where I wanna be. I come here to see what I wanna see, to talk to anyone I wanna talk, to post what I wanna post, to find knowledge and skills I was deprived. And what we have now? What do we do then?

Portmaster from @safing is a great tool not only for but also for . You really get an overview of which apps do which requests. Their so called really stands out from other . It's very similar to . However, like the , speeds are very slow. Everything from the client to the servers are completely , which is a big plus. If you can accept slow speeds, the spn is your best choice.

: "The company acquired Onavo, a virtual private network software app, in 2013 for about $US200 million ($292 million) and marketed it to users as a way to “keep you and your data safe” by keeping their personal activity private.

But internal documents prepared by Meta and its subsidiary Facebook Israel suggested Onavo user data was being used for another purpose. One document read: “The best part about these apps ... is that it gives us a sample of users who we are able to know nearly everything they are doing on their mobile device.”

Mark Zuckerberg chief executive of Meta, which has agreed to pay a $20 million fine for conduct that was likely to mislead or deceive. Bloomberg

The data, which was aggregated and anonymised, was used to help advertisers “identify local competitors, notice big trends, find overlaps in use, benchmark your performance in significant-margin differences, notice a shift in consumer attention”, the same document added."

WebRTC runs using IP addresses, so it’s tough to completely obliterate ‘leaks’ if you’re running on the public instance of at meet.jit.si. will probably downscale your streams anyway, but that may not be as much of a problem if you still get sufficient bandwidth.

You can deploy your own Jitsi server and then force all connections to go through . That helps to shield IPs but frankly, it only makes it harder -

: "It’s difficult for technologists to build for all these different use cases, so many don’t. Some VPN providers are very focused on content streaming access in their business and operating models; others are more focused on online privacy and transparency, while others center on circumvention and anti-censorship.

The variety of user threat models and service provider business models in a multi-billion dollar global VPN industry all paint a picture of a complex, unregulated space. Given these challenges, this ecosystem can be a dangerous one for users to navigate.

In collaboration with the VPN Initiative at Team CommUNITY, OTF brought together different stakeholders to unpack the main technical, operational, user-facing, and community-related challenges that face VPNs focused on circumvention and user safety. It is our hope that increased collaboration and trust building within the space is the first step towards a safer and more seamless experience for users.

Here are some takeaways and opportunities that arose from the discussion at the VPN Convening which we hope community members will engage with and take forward:"

A lot of talk about certain VPNs ending port-forwarding and how this affects torrents, but some are making it seem as though it's impossible to torrent without port-forwarding. Anyone care to offer a clearer and pragmatic picture? (I torrent Linux distro iso files, of course...)

blocked in over SB287 age-verification law bleepingcomputer.com/news/tech It's a feature, not a bug: Utah Gov. Spencer Cox 😆 signed an age-verification law that's impossible to comply with, hoping that adult websites would the state. Hopefully Utahans will become familiar with trustworthy . (Fun fact: I did a comedy skit in 2021, called "Moist Ointment," about a similar law signed by the hilariously named governor.)

You know when you almost don't want to try to fix something because you just know the attempt is going to be a time sink and you question whether it's really worth the time? Tonight it's clients, , , and very questionable download speeds 😑

I'm getting pretty confident telling people if none of the following are well ranked on a ‘review’ site - drop the site ❌

- @mullvadnet
- @ivpn
- @protonvpn
- Windscribe

Sites with the best & reputation consistently have these as their top winners, and for good reason - they’re pushing the envelope on keeping you safe, without insane sponsor/affiliate deals to buy out websites.
