I've long wondered if V.S. Naipaul will be forgotten or even decanonized in the next decade or so. He was a thoroughly mean and nasty man and an often needlessly cruel writer who loved punching down and wallowing in ugly colonial tropes. I hated A HOUSE FOR MR. BISWAS, but I did like A BEND IN THE RIVER (though with significant reservations). Howard French has an interesting new essay on the latter.
