I really do think Vehicle to Load, Vehicle to Grid, or Bi-directional charging will be game changers. This will basically give every EV owner the capacity of multiple powerwalls and help shift peak demand from the grid and enable virtual energy storage. I don't see how anyone loses with this and I wish the entire industry would speed this up. It's great to see GM fully embrace this on all upcoming EVs. #GM #EVs #VTL #VTG

Having gone down that route myself, I'd suggest that battery storage is crucial as well. This obviously adds cost but massively increases the amount of your self-generated energy that you can actually use.

Once EV usage increases, there will be a good number of batteries on wheels that could also help out, via vehicle-to-grid.
