This afternoon I had the opportunity to join members of Governor Phil Scott’s administration and the Addison County Legislative Delegation in a listening session to hear about the flood damage in Addison County.

Like so many Vermonters, folks in Addison County have suffered losses due to the flood. But individuals can’t get federal help because our county has not met a mysterious and undefined level of losses. 1/2

At the Addison County Economic Development Corporation meeting this morning, we heard from Kevin Chu of the Vermont Futures Project. They are working with the state to develop a plan for increasing Vermont’s population to meet our employment needs and non-seasonal housing stock to meet our housing needs. 1/2

I represent five communities. In two of them people can get FEMA assistance for damage they suffered in the July storms; in three of them, they cannot. Why? vtdigger.org/2023/08/04/despit 1/3

@ntnsndr Agreed! Shoutout to two of my favorites: Vermont’s Legislative Counsel and House Clerk’s Office.

Legislative Counsel is a team of lawyers who will write any bill, research any topic, and delve into every tiny detail of legislation. We have no idea of their personal opinions on any of it.

The Clerk’s Office ensures that the House follows all laws and rules, processing all actions as per the rules and the Constitution.

Democracy would not function without these folks.

It's an incredibly busy time at the statehouse. Last Friday was crossover day, which is the day that most bills need to be passed out of committee. Two days later those bills become floor reports, and floor debates, and long hours on the floor.

Today we passed four bills on final reading, and took bill reports and had debate on five more: H. 473, 476, 230, 288, and 178. 1/2

One of the big things I said I wanted to work on during my campaign was the housing crisis in our state. Today, I had the opportunity to give testimony to the General & Housing Committee on a bill I introduced to create the Office of the Housing Advocate. 1/2

Yesterday I had to take a stand for something that I believe strongly in. Working with a broad collation of Democrats, Republicans, Progressives, and Independents, we tried to preserve and expand ballot access in Vermont. A thread. 1/7

Rep. Donahue also complimented my report on the floor of the house, which is very high praise in this chamber.

Thank you to everyone who was so supportive, everyone who helped me prepare, and everyone who shared pictures with me! 6/6

As I mentioned last week, one of the big things we do as representatives is something called a “bill report.” When a bill comes out of committee, one of the members who voted for it takes on the responsibility of explaining the bill to the full House. 1/6

One of the biggest questions we are facing right now as legislators is H. 97, which later became H. 429, a “miscellaneous” elections bill. I’ve decided to vote no on this bill, and I want to explain why.

I’m going to begin by trying to explain, as fairly and as simply as possible, the provisions of this bill. This bill would change the law in the following ways: 1/8

A question for the sages of : assuming the political will exists, should Vermont keep multi-member legislative districts after the 2030 reapportionment cycle or should we move towards single-member districts for the State House and Senate?

It’s an interesting time in the statehouse. The House floor has been quiet, with few announcements and even fewer bills. Things occasionally pop up, but with broad consensus and little debate.

Beneath that veneer there is intense work going on. 1/5

The treatment, called CAR T-cell therapy, uses genetically modified versions of a patient’s own T-cells to find and attack cancer cells, according to UVM.

Hospital officials said the therapy eliminates cancer in 50-80% of patients.

I love the daily devotionals in the House. Yesterday’s was one of my favorites, led by Toussaint St. Negritude, a poet and musician from Newark, VT. His poem kept repeating, “Once upon a time, there will be this thing called freedom.” Watch it here: youtube.com/live/8aZliOGh_dE?f

Who isn’t thrilled for Chris & for DCF?! I’m ecstatic he’s landed in such a perfect role - for him & VT. He’s a phenomenal leader, VT's best mench, & makes terrible jokes. Congrats, Chris!🥂💙 vtdigger.org/2023/02/16/former

Today we elected our Sergeant At Arms, a critically important role to make sure the Statehouse runs smoothly and safely. We were lucky to have one amazing candidate, Janet Miller, who has distinguished herself in this role for many years. She was elected unanimously. 1/6
