The Vega 2nd stage motor Zefiro 40 was observed to lose chamber pressure progressively from T+151 s. It was concluded that there was gradual deterioration of the SRM's nozzle, a "thermo-mechanical over-erosion" of the nozzle's carbon-carbon throat insert.

Noch ist es zu früh, den technischen Ablauf der Katastrophe zu rekonstruieren, aber klar ist, dass es für #airbusdefenceandspace ein herber Verlust ist.

Das kam höchst unerwartet: Die #Vega - Mission #VV22 ist letzte Nacht gescheitert. Die zweite Stufe der #Rakete, eine #Zefiro-40, hat versagt. Für eine #Feststoffrakete wirklich sehr ungewöhnlich.

Sadly #VV22 #VegaC suffered an anomaly - see the link to the timestamp below, when the second stage powered by Zefiro 40 starts underpeforming and "swinging" with the gimballed thrust control (the stream continued for the next 10 minutes).

Zefiro 40 is a new engine introduced with the Vega C, but unlike the first stage motor, it's largely derived from the Zefiro 23 used in the first-gen Vega.

Cause of the failure will be investigated in coming weeks.
