The boy raked the path but left a single fallen autumn leaf on it. When Basho saw the leaf, he asked the boy why he had left it there. The boy replied that he thought it was beautiful and that it would be a shame to remove it. Basho praised the boy for his sensitivity and appreciation of beauty.
