The Little Blue Heron is one of the smaller herons, about the same size as a Black-crowned Night Heron, but much less robust. It is found year-round in South America up through the Caribbean and Central America and into the southern U.S. During the summer, it can be found as far north as the northeastern U.S. Little Blues are largely found in marshland and other shallow-water areas, where they preferentially forage on small fish. Juveniles of this species have white plumage and will mingle with similarly-sized Snowy Egrets, deriving advantages in both feeding and protection from predators. Some researchers have suggested that this is a form of adaptive mimicry. So, the first photo is of an adult, the second of a juvenile, the third of a first year transitional form called "Calico," and the fourth, just for comparison, a Snowy Egret. All photos taken at McKinnon's Pond, Antigua. Although populations have declined by 49% since 1966, mostly due to habitat loss and human water use, the IUCN lists this bird as "of low concern." (Info from the Cornell Ornithology lab).

Their Majesty...
Last summer, this Willet flew over to perch a few feet away on an educational kiosk, while scolding me loudly for intruding on their nesting territory. The two subspecies of these crow-sized wading birds nest in freshwater marshes in the northwestern prairie states and Canadian provinces (western) and in salt marshes in the northeastern U.S. and Canadian Maritimes (eastern). Both migrate, often long distances south during the winter. There are also resident populations in the Caribbean. They feed on a variety of small invertebrates and vertebrates. They are the sister species to the Lesser Yellowlegs, meaning they are more closely related to each other than either is to the Greater Yellowlegs. Willets are considered to be at risk due to loss of breeding habitats.
