#Wairoa Volunteer clean up

An iwi-lead volunteer group has been mobilised & started work.
Anyone who is able & keen to assist should meet at the volunteer hub.

Meet daily, 9.00am at Hinemihi Marae

Bring covered shoes or preferably gumboots

Bring any equipment if you can (e.g. spades)

A BBQ lunch will be provided

Anyone with machinery operating skills, please go to the QRS yard.

Connectivity: still many issues, please share info (this was for Wairoa, but applies to a lot of places).

Accommodation: urgently looking for available accommodation within Wairoa Township for emergency response personnel arriving today. 9 people til at least 24 Feb, would need to stay together or right next door. Please conserve fuel. Supply is challenging. GAS Wairoa are out. Z Wairoa only available for those with requisition forms 12pm - 6pm daily. Requisition forms are processed through council offices for those without power & relying on generators.

Waste Management

Contractors picking up flood-damaged items. Collection point is Railway Rd, or roadside pick up. Please keep separate: silt/ mud, general waste, hazardous waste, whiteware. Hold on to regular rubbish. Landfill closed.

Roads

SH2 #Gisborne via Opotiki open 7am – 7pm for all traffic.

SH2 Gisborne to #Wairoa open 7am – 7pm for all traffic.

Expect delays as there are crews working. Restrictions will be reassessed Monday.

SH2 #Napier to Wairoa remains closed & will be for some time.

SH35 between Tolaga Bay & Te Puia Springs remains closed with a bridge out. Alternative TBC.

Hoping to have a bypass road for Tiniroto Road by Monday.

Drive to the conditions & don't abuse road crews

The main area impacted was the North Clyde side towards Frasertown. Limited impact on south side of town.

Electricity still patchy in town & some of outer district without power. No phone or internet.

Working on reopening roads & reconnecting people. There are areas they haven't been able to make contact with yet.

Te Reinga Bridge still closed. Bridges on SH2 to Napier have been washed away; prioritising access to Gisborne and SH38.The road between Wairoa & Mahia is open.

Seems to be terrible flooding in #wairoa #NewZealand where my brother is living. Scary stuff

Thank you everyone for your messages. Comms at this stage is sharing the info twe do have.

Wairoa is isolated both regionally & with areas of the district cut off. Very limited electricity, no internet or phone connection. These are being worked on as a priority.

Those people who needed to evacuate their homes are safe and being looked after in the evacuation centres.

PM's update re #Wairoa

NEMA have managed to get a person on the ground in Wairoa today and start to get a good idea of the situation.

Emergency services will get through as soon as they can. A water bottle drop from a helicopter is being planned, as well as a BBQ to feed people who need it.

We know there's a lot of people worried about their Wairoa whānau so good to know they've managed to get through & we should be able to get a better idea of the situation there.

#Gisborne & #Wairoa are without internet, cellphone services, eftpos & landline after the communications cable was severed at 2:15am as a result of Cyclone Gabrielle. We are isolated by road as a region. SH2 closed to both Napier & Opotiki & SH35 from Okitu to Opotiki.

Restrict water use to emergency use only. there are breakages in the network. Plans are being put in place but this is not a quick fix.
