Q. what do #mentalhealth related #school absences & #longtermsickness have in common?

Both (in part) suggest our society is dysfunctional for an increasing proportion of our population.

Certainly there are immediate causes (from exam related stress to long #waitinglists), but what both trends reveal is a system that puts (further) pressure on the absentees & sees them as the problem, not the system itself.

Rather we need to see our social structures & practices as the underlying cause(s)!

30 years ago I wrote about #NHS #WaitingLists. They were bad then, but worse now.
The #BMJ asked me to comment on the PMs pledge to tackle the 7m waiting now. My editorial is behind a paywall but key take homes are
1. We could reduce waiting but this would need more £££, staff and political will
2. There's a much bigger pernicious problem: #inequality. The gap between rich and poor was big in 1980, it's colossal now.

No-one can be surprised but #NHS trusts with long #waitinglists are now suggesting to patients they might want to go private to avoid the queue...

On one hand we can see exasperated #healthcare professionals just trying to help their patients...

but more corrosively, this is the #NHS doing the #tories wrecking work for them - this *really* is not just a two-tier system but the acceleration of privatisation by stealth.
