Killer roads prevent fossil fuel free mobility

"...Most transport funding goes towards building wider and longer roads “embedding car dependency” – which leads to more driving and ultimately more congestion."

"Thirty-five cyclists were killed on Australia’s roads last year, slightly down on the 10-year average of 38.5. About half of those were aged 40 to 64, and most were men, according to the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics.
Australian Institute of Health and Welfare statistics show 14,796 bike riders were hospitalised in 2021-22."

Adults who live in walkable neighborhoods are found to be 1.5 times more likely to engage in adequate levels of physical activity, and 0.76 times less likely to have obesity, compared to adults living in neighborhoods with low walkability.

Walkable towns or fossil fuel dependent car infrastructure?
Having the 9 am Belllingen traffic jam in mind:

“Poor planning and over-development in the once-sleeping... suburb has made overcrowded streets and parking a nightmare. It's turned what was a really beautiful little suburb into a place of a lot of frustration and disappointment”

"What we've seen overseas is this move towards a walkable city. Taking cars out, having really good public transport, having mixed-use development so you have retail, you have residential and then you have office buildings."

Let's flip this new survey from @pewresearch.

Two out of five Americans would prefer living in smaller homes, closer to each other, if schools, stores, and restaurants were within walking distance. pewresearch.org/short-reads/20

Car culture plays a huge role in obesity. Insist on walkability and good liveable city design.

Step 1 is eliminating parking minimums, making density possible for walkable distances.

When someone is hit by a car, says @kmralph on @freakonomics, we often ask: What were they wearing? Where were they crossing?

But if we focus on drivers, we see that while they hit 284 people in Edmonton one year, they hit 5,500 other stationary objects. freakonomics.com/podcast/why-i
