4. Start counting your steps. Increasingly, there's no hard evidence that a certain number is essential for health, but setting a goal can be motivating.
5. Find some company! - it can be a bit of a trudge walking by yourself, but team up with a friend for a natter as you walk to pass the miles.

My daughter and I walked to her school for the first time, 45 minutes through snow and slush. We arrived bang on time, but we also crossed a psychological barrier.

Now we've walked it once, we know we can do it again.

Her: "It's so beautiful! I love how the snow makes the trees look!"

What do people need to walk more?

Mobility/fitness, safe pavements, suitable clothing and shoes. Let's design communities with pavements -and economies that work for all of us.
