In Northern Europe, cattle was blessed at the beginning of #May before they were moved to summer pastures. #Beltane marked the beginning of summer on #May1. To protect cattle from disease, druids would make 2 fires "with great incantations" and drive the cattle between them. This was still done in a Christianised adaptation, #WalpurgisNight, the eve of Saint Walburga day, in which bonfires are lit to this day. They burn all night to also drive away evil spirits, witches, and disease.
