The amazingly well preserved Wanlockhead Beam Engine in Wanlockhead, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland's highest village. It was built here in the 1870s to help drain a lead mine that had by then been in operation for two centuries. The superb Museum of Lead Mining can be found high in the Lowther Hills in Wanlockhead, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland's highest village. Wanlockhead in Dumfries & Galloway, high in the Lowther Hills to the west of the A74(M). It developed from about 1680 to mine lead and other metals and is the highest village in Scotland at 467m or 1,531ft. Leadhills Station, on the Leadhills & Wanlockhead Railway in South Lanarkshire. Britain's highest adhesion railway reaches a height of 1,500ft at its Wanlockhead end.
