A militiawoman riding a horse near Calahonda by Gerda Taro, 1937. This picture was used to illustrate the evacuation of Malaga in the magazine "Regards" (R). Between 3000 and 5000 civilians were killed by the rebel artillery and the German and Italian aviation when they tried to leave Malaga on his way to Almeria.

Early in the war around 50% of BEF horse casualties were attributed to preventable causes. Veterinary officers were thus urged that they must 'lose no opportunity to preach the word of horse management'

‘Mollie was the animal which had nearly put me out by having me up against a tree. She was not the easiest of rides, and I was very pleased with her when she gave my batman Driver Wiles…a fall - he was unhurt, but I had the laugh of him!’ - A.O. Temple Clarke

Bonus #WarHorseWednesday for Mastodon because you’ve made me feel so welcome here! An equine detail from The Battle of #Aboukir by Antoine-Jean Gros. #Napoleon is seen riding a white horse and this is no coincidence. White horses have been mythologised since ancient times as having heavenly qualities and representing the triumph of good over evil. Their riders inherit these qualities, such is the cultural bond between man and horse. #Napoleonic #Histodons #AnimalHistory

For #WarHorseWednesday this week: the equestrian relief of Louis XIV by Antoine Coysevox in the Salon de la Guerre at #Versailles. The art at Versailles is a splendid example of the diverse symbolism of equines, from freedom & nobility to power, independence & endurance. #Histodons

It’s #WarHorseWednesday so say hello to ‘Pearl’ (named on the reverse of this card). She is enjoying some down time with her Royal Artillery chums here in July 1914, shortly before the start of the FWW. Who knows where she (and the lads pictured) ended up..

A beautiful pair of draught horses from the Army Service Corps 11th (Northern) Division for #WarHorseWednesday today. The British Army had detailed guidelines on the kind of animals it recruited and high standards of veterinary care, which resulted in the fewest equine deaths (proportionally) among all nations during the #FirstWorldWar. #Histodons #MilitaryHistory #AnimalHistory #Logistics
