#OTD in 1943 Riziero Fantini was executed. After emigrating to the USA in the 20s, he returned to Italy where he started a campaign to save Sacco and Vanzetti. In 1943, he was detained accused of being a partisan, tortured and shot.

The soldier in the left picture probably lost the first couple rounds against the turkeys, judging by the amount of feathers on his uniform.

#OTD in 1944, Gabriella Degli Esposti was executed. She was a partisan and founder of the Women Defence Groups (femenine partisan groups). She was captured by SS troops on 13.12.44. The Germans blinded her, cut away her breasts, and cut open her belly (she was pregnant) before shooting her. Remember her.

#OTD in 1943 Celso Strocchi, partisan, was summarily executed after being tortured for days, his face was unrecognisable. He was captured the previous October after attempting to kill a Console Fascista (same rank as a Colonel) in Ravenna.

#OTD in 1943, Colonel Riccardo Maraffa died in Dachau.
He was the founder of the Italian African Police, role in which he theorised the use of helicopters for policing. After the armistice he incorporated hundreds of "stray" soldiers to the Police of Rome saving them from deportation but after refusing to join the RSI he was sent to Dachau by the Gestapo, where he died of a heart attack.

#OTD the new Italian Army, reborn after the armistice, fought against the 15th Pz Grenadier Dv in Montelungo. The Allies demanded sacrifices in exchange of redemption, Italian politicians wanted to appease them, and the troops paid the price with 150 casualties. #WarInItaly

#OTD Giaime Pintor, writer and partisan, was killed by a German mine whilst crossing the enemy lines with the SOE agent Max Salvadori. They were carrying information about the German forces defending Rome.

#OTD in 1944 Irma "Anty" Marchiani, partisan, was killed. She was captured in May '44 whilst looking after a wounded comrade and sent to a concentration camp. She escaped and rejoined a partisan band and once again stayed behind looking after wounded partisans. She was captured whist trying to cross through the enemy lines, this time she was executed by the Germans. She was 33yo. She was awarded the Gold Medal of Military Valour posthumously.

#OTD in 1944 Gabriele Foschiatti died in Dachau. During WW1 he joined the Legione Garibaldina fighting the Germans at Argonne and participated in the occupation of Fiume. During WW2 he founded the Democratic Front, an antifascist organisation. In 1943 he was captured and deported to Dachau.

Toti actually lost his leg pre-war whilst working as a stoker and yet he cycled to the front to fight the enemy, he died in combat.
Scatoli was wounded in 1870 during the Capture of Rome.
WW1 is considered here as part of the Independence wars.
