So the question is-- can anyone cite the paragraph in #Belgian #law¹ which covers legal tender?

Art. VI.7/4 WER seems to give partial coverage of the 2022 law mandating electronic payment acceptance, but it does not cover the still-standing legal tender acceptance mandate.

I’d like to see the nuts & bolts of the law as written in this case to confirm if contracts can really override it - or if the press reports are correct.

@matzipan I used Paypal before they locked my account & kept the money -- before I became broadly aware of Paypal’s wrongdoing.

w.r.t checks, what do you do in Europe if you want to pay someone who does not have a bank account? A check covers that situation. Cash is better, but because of the #warOnCash Belgium, France, & Spain have outlawed cash transactions above a certain amount.

@simon @adam I thought cheques were the norm in the UK.

In the US: paper checks are still king for sending money remotely. Wires are absurdly expensive. E-checks move slower than snail-mailed paper checks & they are subject to scrutiny. I tried to send ~$300 by popmoney (echeck) & got interrogated as to how I know the person & what I was buying. Took like 4 days.

If they need the money bad enough, they will accept cash. We have a civic duty to fight the #warOnCash.

An #Argenta customer told me she made an appointment to withdraw €10k cash from her #bank account. When she arrived, they refused claiming they could only allow €3k. She asked to speak to the manager, who then called the police. The police cuffed her & arrested her. #WarOnCash

Just saw another vending machine in a Belgian train station where the entry for coins was blocked and it's now a cards only machine. The same stuff happens on self check out at #Delhaize supermarkets. Machines designed to take cash with that function blocked by some policy. I call it #WarOnCash and I don't like it one bit. I shouldn't be forced to provide bank information in order to buy a drink at a station

@EchteNachtraaf @DVE Manhatten Burger in #Brussels has become cashless. That’s a pay-in-advance establishment, which means it’s clearly a point-of-sale (not a debt payment). Are they breaking the law by refusing cash? #warOnCash

@I_Like_Books It’s very convenient for their PR dept that all they have to do is get ppl migrated onto e-payments. That’s it. From there, cash will be eliminated with no further action on their part. It’s like making weapons & giving them to Russia while saying at the same time “those are defense weapons.. we do not support attacks”. Govs already started taking final steps. #warOnCash

I heard in #Belgium (#Brussels perhaps?) that a group of activists recently entered a #cashless cafe, ordered & enjoyed food & drinks and then insisted on paying cash. The cafe called the police, who then showed up but took no action & left because consumers have a right to pay in cash. Anyone know if those activists are a public org that can be joined &or supported? #askFedi #warOnCash

@katow @blacklight The only 100% absolute way to secure financial data from data breaches is to not collect the data in the first place. #ForcedBanking imposes that collection. Cash is the only fool-proof means to data protection.

The general public sees the #WarOnCash as a move against criminals w/out noticing that it actually creates vulnerabilities by which cyber criminals thrive.

War on cash is war on #privacy in may respects.
